” You Never Know ”

Foreman and Mia,have been married for ten years.

They brought a nice house in Bestrewn, Pennsylvania. Both have great jobs,

Mia is a school teacher, teaching first grade. Foreman is a manager at the local bank,in town.

They have no children,…Forman and Mia have tried for years. They both

went to a specialist,to get test after test. But after all the different

testing,the specialist’s couldn’t come up with a reason they couldn’t.

Which made them very unhappy.

Mia and Forie, which Mia called him for his pet name. Decided, they both should have a social night out alone. Him with the guys, and her with the gals.

“Mia,I think by doing this, we’ll both get a break from each other. All we been doing,is getting on each others nerves.”

“Yes Forie, your probably right. With all this drama, for no reason.”

That was a year ago.

Mia,is petite,in her early thirties. Long blonde hair, green eyes, and slender.

Her Forie, is in his late thirties, average height, and weight. Medium brown hair, which is cut short, and squared off in the back.

The next day after work, Mia went to the market,to pick a few things up

that she needed for the week. As she started to get out of her car,to go

into the market. She noticed a friend of the family ,Betty. Who was

walking out of the market with a couple of bags in her cart.

Betty was in her sixties, tall, with short grey hair. She was a close friend of Mia’s late mother.

Mia walked toward Betty. who’s hand was clasped over her mouth.

“Mia!” I haven’t seen you since your mom passed.

What’s that been six years?”

“Wow ,it’s been a long time, Betty”

“I’ve seen Foreman a couple of times, where I work part-time. I’ve seen him with a dark hair woman. They were carrying on, like two teenagers. You and Foreman are separated?”

Mia’s eyes lite up, her face was the color of a ghost. With tears racing down her face.

Betty embraced Mia.

“Oh Mia!” “I am so sorry!”

“I didn’t think, before I opened my big mouth. I feel so bad.”

When Mia finally composed herself. She wiped her face with her hand.

“No we’re not separated, nevertheless,it answers a lot of questions. He has been acting strangely, lately.”

“Furthermore, I’m not going to ask you where you work. I’ll get to the bottom of this, tonight.”

Mia then just turned around, and said goodby to Betty.

Betty stood there, and watched Mia back her car up, and speed away.

On the way home, Mia couldn’t believe, what was happening.

I know he has be moody.I blamed his work, with all his responsibilities.

But I was wrong, he isn’t happy with me.

When Mia pulled into her driveway, Foreman’s truck was already parked out
front, which was strange.

Because he wasn’t expected home, for another two hours.

Mia got out of her car,and slammed the door shut.

She ran in the house to confront her husband of ten years.

He was sitting in his big chair,in the living room. Reading a newspaper.

“Guess who I ran into today, Foreman?

“I don’t give a dam,who you ran into today. I left work early today, because, I’ve been wanting to get something off my chest.”

“Oh you have,how nice!”

“Let me speak!”

Excuse me, dam it!”

“I want a divorce, Mia.”

“Well, well, you want a divorce. By any chance, does it have to do with your dark hair hussy?

“Her name is,Josephine,and she’s not a hussy.”

“I told her, that I wasn’t married. At first, it was just a night out. I fell in love,it just happened.”

“So now you want a divorce from me. Your just tossing me away like trash, after ten years of marriage. cried Mia

“I didn’t plan this, we were slowly pulling away from each other.sighed Foreman.

“Maybe you, Forman.”

“Don’t make it any harder. Josephine told me three weeks ago, that she was carrying our baby.”

Shocked to what Forman just said to her. Mia grabbed a lamp, and threw it at him. Fragments of the lamp, was scattered all over the living room.

“Get out of this house now, you’ll get your dam divorce. Don’t come back, ever.” cried Mia

Foreman snatched his keys off the table, and flew out the door, slamming it.

Mia watched him pull away, and cried herself to sleep.

“It is what it is!”

Wink, was sitting on his front porch, that he and his late wife,Rose owned. This was his last day here, which he called home.

Wink’s real name was Stetson John, his nickname came from his friends, when he was a young lad. Wick had this twitch in his left eye, ever since he was born. Everyone thought he was winking at them.

At age 85……Wink thought he was doing great.

Since his Rose, of 50 years passed suddenly 7 years ago,at age 73. They borne 2 children, one son Brent, age 60,and a daughter Valeria, age 58. They both have good jobs and spouses. Brent and his wife Karen, has 1 son, Brent Jr. Valeria and her husband Kent, has no children.

Wink was in great shape for his age. Until 2 years ago, when he started forgetting things. It started with little things, than it progressed. He would drive somewhere and forget how to get back home.
Luckily one time,a police officer noticed him pulled over the side of the road. Wink was standing outside his car and waving to everybody, that passed by.
When the officer pulled behind his car, he got out of his vehicle,he walked over to Wink.

Wink smiled at the officer.

The officer didn’t know what to think,he was smiling and winking at him.

“What’s the matter sir?”

“I have to get home, my wife Rose, has dinner waiting for me. My problem is,I don’t know which way to go.”

“So your lost sir?”

“Yes you could say that!”

“Can I see your drivers license?”

The officer took the license, that Wink gave him.

“Stand on the other side of your car,and I’ll be right back.”

The officer enter his vehicle, and did background checking. He came back out of the car after 5 minutes.

“Mr. John, you live 8 miles from here.Let me take you to the police station for your safety. Then we’ll call your wife,so she doesn’t worry.”

Once they got there,Wink gave the officer his number. The officer called his house several times, but no one answered.

“Do you have any other family that I can call?

“Let me look in my wallet.”

There he found another number.

“Here you go,this is my daughter Valeria’s number.”

The officer took the card from Wink, and called his daughter.

The phone rang, after the third ring, a woman answered.

“Hello Valeria speaking.”

“Hello,are you Mr. John’s daughter?

“Yes I am.”

“This is officer Minsky,I have your father here at the police station.”

“Oh my god!” Is he okay?”

“Yes he is, I found him parked along side the road, he was lost. I called your mother, but there was know answer. Your father said he was late for dinner.”

“Oh my!” Mom’s been dead for quite a while.”

“Sorry to here that!”

“Which station is he at? I’ll come and pick him up.”

“Hanover’s township.”

“I know where that’s at…..he really did get lost, didn’t he?” “Can I talk to my dad?”

“Sure thing.”

He handed Wick the phone.

“Hello!” Wick said

“Hi dad,I’m on my way!”

“You don’t have to pick your mother up.”

“I know dad,I know.”

After that incident,Wink stay with his daughter, and her husband Kent for a while. they knew he couldn’t go home by himself any more.

Valeria and her brother Brent sat down with their father, and talked about what he wanted.

Wink kept changing his mind about what he wanted.

Therefore, brother and sister, hoped they made the right decision for him.

Their decision was, he was going to live with Brent, and his wife Karen. Both had to work,so they hired a nurse to take care of him, while they worked.

That meant, his house that he loved, had to be sold.

“That is the reason,Wink sat on his porch for the last time. While his daughter and son, were in the house gathering all his personal belongings. The moving truck would be there soon.

“Don’t worry Rose, we’re going to be okay.”

“Maryann’s Visit”

My sister Maryann,is on the bus, going back to Colorado. She has a long way to go 44 hours.  I don’t think,I could sit that long.

My sister isn’t home yet,and I miss her. I’m sure everyone in the family will miss her. It’s been twenty-nine years since we all seen her.  Of course we kept in touch with her on the phone. But it isn’t the same as seeing her in person. She is still funny with all her jokes, and sayings, and still beautiful.

My sister has been planning this vacation for quite some time. She said it took a long time to prepare for this, but was well worth it.

My husband Charlie and I invited her to stay with us for two weeks, which she did.

Everyone of my siblings, and most family members, took their turns to spend time with her. Sharing things and going different places that Maryann would enjoy.

She got to visit family members, just to enjoy the company, and swap different stories from the past.

Maryann’s things to do,  which she accomplished all.

She said, she would be happy, just sitting in the back yard. Just drinking coffee and chatting about the old times.

Which we did, but she fell in love with my enclosed first porch. Yes,that is where we did our chatting about the old times, and of course drinking our favorite drink, which is  coffee.

Yes I’m going to miss my sister, the laughing, the chats, our walks, and her just being near. My youngest sister Rosie, will surly agreed with me.

Me and my sister Maryann.

Me and my sister Maryann.

“Home”

Neal Finus was in a nursing home in Pennsylvania. He had plenty of time to think. he was in his late seventies, short and stocky. He use to have a mop of hair, which was dark brown …… But now he is almost bald.

There isn’t a day that goes by,that he doesn’t think of his wife Ruby. They were married for forty-eight years, and had three children together.  Neal Jr, Nina, and Terri.     Neal Jr, was killed in the service, twenty-five years ago.  Nina travels around the world, with her husband. Her husband’s  job takes him all over the world. She keeps in touch sometime.

Terri and her three children, which are grown now. Lived with Neal and Rudy after she was divorce from her husband.

When Ruby died suddenly , about five years ago. Terri stayed and took care of her father.

Until Terri got tired of taking care of her father.  She suggested  for him to sell his house, and they would move into an apartment. Neal wouldn’t have anything to do with it,because he was staying put.

Terri threaten to leave him by himself. Because she had her own life to live.

The arguing went on for quite a while. Terri didn’t leave,  because she had no place to go.  The money she was getting from working four days a week at the corner store. Wasn’t sufficient to go out on her own.

One day as they were arguing, Neal had a hard-attack. It was pretty bad. He was in the hospital for about a month. He couldn’t go home until someone was their to take care of him.

Neal told his doctor about the crazy arguing with his live-in daughter, about selling his house.

Terri called her sister, and told her about their father. Nina said her and her husband are in Alaska.

She didn’t think she could come home any time some.

“Just do what you think is best!” sighed  Nina

Since then Neal was sent to a near-by nursing home.

Terri would come in and take her father in his wheel chair, out in the garden.  Both still fussing over about selling his house.

Neal told her,he refuses to sell the  house.

The visits got less and less with Terri.  Nina and Terri would call him….. ask if he needed anything.

His answer is  always,”I just want to go back home.”

From day to day,Neal sits in his wheelchair, and thinks about the good times…they all had.

“He thought,   “If Rudy was still here, she would take care of me in our house.”

I better stop daydreaming, and open Autumn’s letter.

Dear Faith,

I received your letter, and you are right,I haven’t been around for Autumn.
Really not for anyone, just myself. But since Ryan came into my life,I now have a new life. We’re getting married, next month.
I’m so happy for Tamara,I wish I was their. On another thought,I probably would of messed up her beautiful day. I’m glad sis, that you,Ben and the whole family was their. Like I said before,I thank you and Ben,for taking her in as your own. Who knows what kind of life, I could have gave her. Matter of fact,I do,I don’t even want to think about it.
Please tell Mom,I’m sorry for everything, and I love her.Tell the rest of the family,I love them also, and I’m sorry.
I’ve been thinking for quite a while, about Ryan and I coming to Pennsylvania. But,it would only open new wounds for everyone, especially for Tamara. Please tell Tamara,I love her,and miss her.I know she won’t understand, but I feel I’m doing the best thing.
This will be my last letter,I don’t want you,or anyone else, worrying about me anymore. Ryan has a better job in the next town,so we will be moving to be near his new job. When we are settled,we are going to get married, and we are going to start a new life for ourselves.

Good By Faith,
Love,
Your sister,Autumn

I put the letter down and cried,I hope everything turns out good, for her and Ryan. I don’t know what to tell Tamara and Mom. I guess,I’ll have to tell them the truth. It’ll hurt feelings, but at least this will help them get on with their own life. By not having to worry about where Autumn is,and if she is alive or dead.
Ben came home from work, and I insisted on reading it to him. He knew I was upset, by the way I looked, with red eyes, and the unhappy look. Ben just sat down and listened.
After I was finished reading the letter.

Ben said, “I think Autumn is making the right decision. She is probably a shame of herself, for what she has been doing, for many years. To come back, and face everyone, especially Tamara. I’m sure Tamara won’t understand, maybe later down the road, but your mother will. She might not like it,but it’ll give her a peace of mind. Knowing that she is going to be alright.”

“Ben do you mind making yourself something to eat? Because I have a lot of phone calls to make. If I wait until later,it’ll be harder for me to do.”
“Don’t worry about me honey,I’ll cook up the best meal, for both of us. You just go and do what you have to do. Leave the cooking to me.”

“Thanks Ben!” I said smiling. “I knew their was a reason I love you.”

It’s getting near the end of March,it definitely feels like spring in the air. I’m so glad that the winter is over, with the daylight savings time in effect, Easter has just passed us. I know,I feel a lot better, and more time to do things that I want to do.

Like I’m going to take a walk in the park, and then sit on the bench, and watch the children play.

There is a small playground here, where I used to take Tamara a lot. I would sit on the bench, and talk to other parents, that were there with there children. We all had such a good time, and enjoyed each others company.

But now the children are all grown-up, sometime, I see a few of the same parents here. We chat about what is going on with our lives.

On the way home from the park, their was a little boy around four, standing on the side-walk,with tears in his eyes.

“What’s a matter honey,why are you crying?”

The little boy said,”My ball rolled down the street again, and my mother said,if it happened again. She would make me come in the house, and I don’t want to.”

“What is your name, and where do you live?”

“My name is Charlie”, and he pointed to the house behind him.

“Okay Charlie, where is your ball,I don’t see it?”

“It’s across the street,in front of that truck.”

So I walked over their, and picked up the ball, and handed it back to him. He was smiling ear-to-ear.

“Thanks lady!”

As I was leaving,a lady standing at the front door of Charlies house. Opened it and hollered,Thank You.”

I felt good,because I did a good deed today.

When I got home,I went in the back yard. I noticed, my hyacinths and roses were blooming, they both have a great smell.
After roaming in the yard,I looked at my watch, and said to myself. I better go inside and take a shower, and get dressed. Because when Ben comes home from work today. He’s taking me out to dinner, and then to see a movie. We are celebrating our thirty-fifth anniversary. I can’t believe that it has been that long. We have been fortunate,to have been married that long. Of course we have, had our ups and downs, and our blessings.

Ben walked in the door, with something he was holding behind him. He gave me a big hug and kiss.

He said,”Happy Anniversary Honey,” you still look as beautiful,as the day I married you.”

“Thanks Ben!

He then took a bouquet of roses, from behind him,and handed them to me.

“This is for the love of my life!

We both kissed for a long time, while the heat from both of our bodies yearn for more.

Ben pulled away and said,”I’m not going to ruin this night. I’m going to go upstairs and take a shower, and get dress. Then I going to take my gal out on the town.”

Before he walks up the stairs,he smack’s me on my butt.

Ben smiles, with that naughty look, and says,”I’m going upstairs, you better not go anywhere.”

Everything was going well, for everybody. One day, when I came home from work. I gathered my mail out of the mail box. Just a few bills, and a lot of advertisement,I thought. Stuck to an envelope, from the electric company. Their was an envelope, with a return address”9764 Linen Avenue,Liken, North Caroline. It was address to me,and I couldn’t imagine who it was from. But deep in my heart,I was hoping it was from Autumn.
I hurried to unlock my front door. Once I got in the door,I threw the rest of the mail,on the kitchen table. I sat down, and carefully opened the envelope. There was a letter in their. It read:

Dear Faith,

I guess you can’t believe, that I finally wrote to you. I guess you already heard, that I left the detox center,in the middle of the night. I’m sorry if I unset you and the rest of the family. But I had to do things my way,to end,my habit.
While I was in the center,I met a man, who’s name is Ryan Hibbson. He is a couple of years older than me. Ryan came from a dysfunctional family. He said,he had the same habit I did, drugs.
We both had the same classes,I grew to know him well. Like magic,we both fell in love, with each other.

One day we got this idea,to leave the center. We agreed, that if we both stuck together, then we could kick the habit together,if we really tried. Ryan and I had this crazy idea,to leave the center in the middle of the night. Just leave our personal things behind, and start a new life together. Which we both thought was so romantic. So we made our escape,a week later.
Ryan said,we could go over to his brother Bruce’s house. Because he wanted him to straighten himself out long time ago. So that is where we ended up. His brother and wife was glad to see him. They asked him all kinds of questions, and he told them, where he’s been.
To try to straighten himself out. Also that he brought his love of his life with him.
We both stayed with them, for about three months. We both got jobs in a Nursing Home. Ryan was hired for a cook.I was hired for an aide. We both saved our money for an apartment, while we were at his brothers.
After Ryan and I had enough money for an apartment,we moved out. Bruce and his wife, treated us real nice,we hated to leave. But we had to move on and test ourselves, alone.

I looked at the clock, and it was almost 5:00. I put the letter down,so I could make dinner for Ben and I. I’ll go back to reading Autumn’s letter, after dinner.

When Ben came home,I didn’t wait until he shut the front door.

I said,”Ben,you’ll never guess,who sent me a letter?”

“Your going to tell me,Autumn?”

“Yes” I said, with tears in my eyes.

“Did she say anything about Tamara?”

“No,not yet,it’s a long letter,I haven’t read it all yet.”

“Don’t you think a mother would asked first?”

“Your right Ben,you would think so. But she hasn’t so far, just about her and her boyfriend Ryan. Lets sit down and eat. Then I can read the rest.”

The Sister,That I Thought,I Knew (58)

The holiday is over,Tamara and Maxwell went back to their colleges. Everyone had such a good time, talking about all the good times, and some bad times. We also talked about Autumn, when things were normal with her.
Mom couldn’t comprehend, where she went wrong. She didn’t say much more, because Tamara was there. Mom said,”no more talk.” Because she didn’t want to ruin,Tamara’s great spirits.

It’s been three whole years, since that great Christmas. Maxwell and Mary Ann,got married, a year after that holiday. Tamara and Ned,got married last year. So far no babies, they have plenty of time ahead of themselves.

Nobody has heard from Autumn,it seems like she has disappeared, from the face of earth. I call the police every year,to see if they have heard anything from her. Every year,I get the same answer,

”I have your telephone number. If we get any new news, you will be the first to know”.

I just pray she is still with us. I’ll have to be patient, some day I hope to hear from her. I’ll just get on with my life, until then.

I started a new job, this week. My old place of employment, never reopened. I got a new job at Sears in the office. I’m working only two days a week, which is fine for me.
On my way home from work,it was raining hard. I’m glad that the temperature was above freezing, because the ride home would really be bad. This morning when I left for work, the ground was snow-covered. It must of snow some last night. Can’t complain, because it is the month of January,I’m sure we will have a lot more of this nasty stuff.

When I got home around 3:30, I made a meatloaf for diner. I made a big pot of Chicken noodle soup yesterday. Ben and I can have that for an appetizer tonight. It is such a bone warmer,on a night like this.

Ben came home around 5:30,and we sat down to eat.

“How did your day go Faith?

“Great Ben,I’m meeting a lot of new people, and they all seem very nice. Someone is always there to help me,if needed.”

“You’ll be okay,I’m sure of that. The drive home was bad,it started sleeting, and people were driving like idiots. Some are always in a hurry to go no-where.”

“I know Ben,when I left work earlier,it was raining hard. I thought,I might have to pull over, because I couldn’t see out of the windshield, very good. But it started to slow down a little bit, which made me happy.”

After we ate dinner,we both watched a little television, and then we went to bed. Because we both had to get up earlier, than we wanted to. Of course the month of January and February has surprises, from mother nature.

The Sister,That I Thought,I Knew (55)

When I got home,I was happy to be there. I would call Ben, but I don’t want to bother him at work. I’ll just wait until he comes home tonight.
Instead,I called Mom,she answered it on the first ring.

“What were you waiting for Mom a call? Your phone only rang once.”

“I was just talking to Maxwell,he said,he can’t wait to bring Mary Ann home.So that everyone can meet her.”
“That was nice Mom. The reason I’m calling is,if you want to go Christmas shopping let me know. I just came from the mall, and when I got out into the parking lot. Some young guy, snatched my purse. The police came, and I gave him my report. The security guard, went in back of the mall, and found my purse. My money was missing, and the police said,I’m lucky it wasn’t my life.”
“He’s right Faith!” “Did you have anything else important in your purse?”

“No” “That’s why I don’t use a wallet, because of something happening like this.”

“What did Ben say?”

“Mom, I didn’t tell him yet,I’ll wait until he comes home from work.”

“Okay Faith!” I’ll let you know if I want to go shopping, talk to you later.”

I hung the phone up,and looked at the clock. I thought I better start dinner. Ben will be home in about an hour.

When dinner was almost done,Ben walked in the door

“Hi Faith! I can smell your meatloaf, I’m starving. Really busy today,I didn’t even get a chance to eat lunch.”

Ben grabbed two plates, from the cupboard. “He said,”I better wash my hands, then I’ll take the meat loaf, out of the oven,if it’s done.”
“It’s finished,I shut the oven off, just before you walked in. You do that, and I’ll finish mashing the potatoes.”

When we both sat down to eat,I told Ben what happened at the mall.

“You were lucky Faith, the money can be replaced, your life is more important. Do want you want, but this time of the year. You should have someone with you, when you go shopping.”

“I called mom and told her what happened. I also told her,if she wants to go Christmas shopping, let me know.”

“That was very smart to say. She shouldn’t be out shopping by herself either ,with those bums out their.”

“I was in the Christmas spirit when I was shopping in the mall. Until that idiot, stole my handbag. But I’m not going to let him ruin my holiday. Tomorrow,I’m going down in the basement, and dig out all my decorations. Maybe,I’ll even play some Christmas music.”

“That’s a great attitude, but just think of me,while I’m working hard.” Said Ben, laughing

“Talking about working Ben,I’m going to see what’s going on at my old job. If their not going to open soon, after the holiday’s. I’m going to look for another job. They must be having money problems, because they have, been shut down for a while.”
“You might be right Faith, things aren’t that great out there.”

The Sister,That I Thought,I Knew (47)

“I’m sorry Ben! I forgot you only had a half of day today. I went to the market today, and got groceries. I was going through the mail, and here is a letter, from the supervisor. Where Autumn was going for detox therapy. According to the letter she was also living at the center.
Ben sighed, and took the letter,I handed him. While he was reading it,he was just shaking his head.

Then he said,”what in the hell, do they expect us to do? Autumn is a grown woman, she has no respect for herself,or her daughter.”

“Maybe Mr. Jones thought,we might know where she would go.He said that she was living on the streets, when she brought herself in.
I think, she only did that,to go in hiding from that drug dealer.
After the three months she stayed there,Autumn probably thought she was safe now. For her sake,I hope she is right.
She would be crazy to go back to the same place. That she was at, before she went into the detox center.

“We just have to wait and see,” said Ben

“Maybe tomorrow,I’ll call the police in Sorta. To see if she is in jail their.”

“Good Luck Faith!” I know she is your sister, but she is a completely different person.

The next day,I was sitting in my kitchen drinking a cup of coffee. While I was looking outside of my kitchen window.
The big tree in the backyard was swaying, and I noticed a few snow flurries. (I thought) What a very beautiful sight.
My mind was back on Autumn. (I thought) When will she get her act together?
Autumn isn’t a child, she is a grown woman. With all the upsets in her life, that is no excuse, for want she is doing to herself and Tamara.
I really don’t know, what to do. If I go to North Carolina, with Chadwick. We wouldn’t know where to look for her. She could be anywhere,if she is still living on the streets.
I believe,my best bet is to call, the Sorta police. Maybe it’ll be a start.
Let me go on the Internet, and see if I can find the number.

I found the site, now where is the police number? There it is……… 790-505-1007. Let me call now,or I might not get the nerve later.
